LOCAL LEP SCALEUP PROGRAMMES

South East Midlands LEP’s (SEMLEP) research programme with scaleups reveals three common traits: a skilled and ambitious management team, detailed knowledge of their markets and strong financial acumen. The research also highlights specific needs.

Meeting these needs is the driving force of SEMLEP’s scaleup strategy. Scaleups need services tailored to the particular challenges they face, and real value is attached to help from companies and individuals who have already been through the scaleup process.

SEMLEP runs Networking breakfasts with businesses looking to scale with businesses who have been through Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses UK and Cranfield Business Growth Programme. They have facilitated networking with the London Stock Exchange to support this too. Other Events include Panel Interviews with networking opportunities afterwards to connect local actors in the ecosystem, such as the Midlands Engine Investment Fund, with scaling businesses.

Scaleups also want new programmes to complement existing provision for key areas, such as:

  • Overcoming barriers to accessing talent and skills, and finance.
  • Better signposting to finance and investment sources, writing applications, and raising the profile of investing to scale.
  • Accessing incubator and accelerator programmes across the region, with many businesses unaware of their eligibility for programmes available.

SEMLEP is focused on meeting these needs through their scaleup provision.
