The ScaleUp Institute is seeking an experienced research and data analyst to join our growing team.

This, private sector, not-for-profit institution is focused on collaborating with Government, policy makers, corporate partners and educational establishments to make a real and identifiable impact in helping our UK high growth businesses to grow further and ‘scaleup’.

We aim to advance understanding of how to scaleup a business, and how to build the most effective environment in which scaleups can flourish. We spread best practice and undertake research, thought leadership and targeted projects with partners.

We work with policy makers to identify opportunities that will support scaleup businesses. We share our methodology and ideas to create resources that will help aspiring scaleup businesses.

Working across the political, corporate, finance and education spectrums at local, national and international level, we use data driven evidence to inform and guide decisions, policy making and product/service developments, that enable companies to scale their business. 

Our network is at the heart of our support. Through our wide variety of activities, our economic development programme, our policy committees and research agenda, we enable cross sections of private and public sector local, national and international ecosystems to work and learn from each other. Thereby developing and assessing initiatives to close the ScaleUp gap and provide solutions to the leaders of our scaling businesses.

You will work directly with colleagues across the ecosystem including senior stakeholders, giving you the opportunity to develop your skills and gain experience from a range of areas. You will be involved in a broad range of tasks and projects.

In this fast-paced environment, you will play a key role working with the senior manager for research and data, alongside the CEO, in developing our research and thought leadership insights and reports.

Main function of job

  • Researching and analysing a range of sensitive data and information from ONS; Companies House, partners and others in the business ecosystem to support the ScaleUp Institute’s programme of work.
  • Monitoring scaleup activity to provide market information and insight.
  • Assessment, interpretation and analysis of a range of statistical information, including numbers of scaleups and pipeline of scaling businesses, through detailed processes and procedures.
  • Leading research assignments and local area assessments/ monitoring. This will include identifying and evaluating ScaleUp programmes and initiatives to turn into effective case studies.
  • Supporting the Annual ScaleUp Survey and Review.
  • Supporting the agreed research agenda within the Scaleup themes of Leadership, Talent and Skills, Access to Markets, Finance and Infrastructure.

Education and Qualifications

Qualifications/education required:

  • A good honours degree and preferably relevant Postgraduate degree.

Experience, knowledge and skills required

  • At least 3-5 years experience in research and analysis of business and financial markets; economic development; productivity; growth and regional dynamics, with a proven track record in research writing and publications. 
  • Knowledge, understanding and interest in business growth, the scaleup ecosystem, international policy, entrepreneurialism, entrepreneurial finance. Cross-sector interest is beneficial
  • Highly numerate with excellent skills in data analytics.
  • Good knowledge of a variety of survey, statistical and data analysis methodologies and analytical software packages: such as SQL, Python / R, tableau, SPSS, Stata.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, including technical writing skills.
  • Problem solving abilities.
  • Proven track record in contributing to published research and analysis.
  • Good time/work management and high regard for timetables and variable workloads.
  • IT literacy (particularly Microsoft Office, Google docs, and advanced Google sheets /MS Excel skills).

You will work directly with colleagues across the ecosystem including senior stakeholders, giving you the opportunity to develop your skills and gain experience from a range of areas. You will be involved in a broad range of tasks and projects.

You will drive and support interaction with political and local ecosystem stakeholders (parliamentarians, select committees, government bodies, city and local authorities, etc) in support of our overall objectives. In this fast-paced environment, you will play a key role working with the Head of External Affairs and CEO in planning, developing and implementing public affairs and associated communication strategies and follow through with key stakeholders.

Your responsibilities will include, alongside the Head of External Affairs, Government engagement at political and official level, producing key ScaleUp Institute internal and external public affairs updates for our partners and ambassadors drawing upon a wide range of sources and contacts; creating public affairs strategic content for web, national and regional media and social media engagement, and; drafting policy documents and briefings in support of key ScaleUp Institute objectives and engagements.

Areas of responsibility

  • Supporting the CEO and Head of External Affairs on engagement across political and official landscape within UK Government and across the UK regions/ devolved nations;
  • Development and implementation of public affairs strategy;
  • Monitoring of key political developments including support to relevant engagement by ScaleUp Institute to Select Committee inquiries, APPGs etc
  • Responses to Government consultations and Select Committee enquiries
  • Speech preparation; specialist articles 
  • Thought leadership and research engagement 
  • Creating and developing content to ScaleUp Institute communications strategy as regards the public affairs arena e.g. parliamentary briefings, ambassador briefings, administration of roundtables etc.
