The ScaleUp Institute is seeking an experienced research and data analyst to join our growing team for a period of maternity cover starting in March 2024.
Working across the business, political, corporate, finance and education spectrums at local, national and international level, we use data driven evidence to inform and guide decisions, policy making and product/service developments that enable companies to scale their business.
We work with the private, public and education sector to identify opportunities that will support scaleup businesses. We aim to advance understanding of how to scaleup a business, and how to build the most effective environment in which scaleups can flourish. We spread good practice and undertake research, thought leadership and targeted projects with partners.
Our network is at the heart of our support. Through our wide variety of activities, our economic development programme, our policy committees and research agenda, we enable cross sections of private and public sector local, national and international ecosystems to work and learn from each other. Thereby developing and assessing initiatives to close the ScaleUp gap and provide solutions to the leaders of our scaling businesses.
As part of the research team you will work directly with colleagues across the ecosystem including senior stakeholders, giving you the opportunity to develop your skills and gain experience from a range of areas. You will be involved in a broad range of tasks and projects.
In this fast-paced environment, you will play a key role working with the senior manager for research and data, alongside the CEO, in developing our research and thought leadership insights and reports.
Main function of job
- Qualitative and Quantitative business research and data analytics
- Undertaking a range of business and international research using various data and information sources including from ONS; Companies House; data providers; ScaleUp Institute partners to support the Institute’s programme of work
- Assessment, interpretation and analysis of a range of statistical information, including investment datasets; regional and international economics etc
- Preparing statistical information for use in consultations, briefings, insight papers and white papers
- Monitoring scaleup activity to provide market information and insight ; including survey activities with businesses
- Producing insights for Annual ScaleUp Review
- Engagement in research covering Leadership, Talent and Skills, Access to Markets, Finance and Infrastructure

Education and Qualifications
Qualifications/education required:
- A good honours degree
Experience, knowledge and skills required
- At least 3-5 years experience in research / analytical roles, ideally in fields of business and financial markets; economic development; productivity; growth and regional dynamics.
- Good knowledge of a variety of survey, statistical and data analysis methodologies and analytical software packages: such as SQL, Python / R, tableau, SPSS, Stata.
- Knowledge, understanding and interest in business growth, the scaleup ecosystem, international policy, entrepreneurialism, entrepreneurial finance. Cross-sector interest is beneficial.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, including technical writing skills. With a proven track record in contributing to published research and analysis.
- Highly numerate with excellent skills in data analytics.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Problem solving abilities.
- Good time/work management and high regard for timetables and variable workloads.
- IT literacy (particularly Microsoft Office, Google Workspace (docs, sheets, etc)).
