Background

The ScaleUp Institute is seeking a Head of Communications to join our growing team, reporting to the CEO.

This private sector, not-for-profit institution is focused on collaborating across the public and private sectors with Government, policy makers, corporate partners and educational establishments to make a real and identifiable impact in developing the UK in its capabilities to scale a business helping our UK high growth businesses to grow further and ‘scale up’.

Scaleups are highly innovative and international, they are found in every sector and region of the UK and contribute significantly to the UK economy representing around 50% of all SME turnover.

We aim to advance understanding of how to scale up a business, and how to build the most effective environment in which scaleups can flourish. We spread good practice, undertake research, thought leadership and targeted projects with partners.

We work with policy makers across the private and public sectors to identify opportunities that will support our scaleup community and those scaling. We share our methodology and ideas to create resources that will help aspiring scaleup businesses grow.

Our national and growing international network is at the heart of our support. Through our wide variety of activities, our economic development programme, our policy committees and research agenda, we enable cross sections of private and public sector, local, national and international ecosystems to work and learn from each other. Thereby developing and assessing initiatives to close the UK ScaleUp gap and provide solutions to the leaders of our scaling businesses. 

Job specification

We are looking for a communications professional with an understanding of research and policy to deliver our external communications and support the strategic growth of the ScaleUp Institute. You will promote the profile and activities of the Institute and create and own the content and communications plan working closely with the the CEO as well as the broader SUI team. 

Main functions of the job 

(Note: In addition to these functions are required to carry out other duties as may reasonably be required)

  • Manage the full spectrum of external communications (Press releases, newsletters, ambassador updates, blogs, social media, website etc.)
  • Manage media opportunities and content, including national, local ; and trade publications.
  • Work on SUI strategic events and thought leadership publications, including Annual Review, Indices and Insights.
  • Work on communication strategies in conjunction with the CEO including speech writing; specialist articles, etc.
  • Work closely with partners in developing content/ comms opportunities. 
  • Work closely with local areas and stakeholders including the development of regional events. 
  • Liaise with external designers where appropriate for content production (digital and print).

The role will include:

Stakeholder Engagement and Communications

  • Oversight of regular newsletters and bulletins, including CEO newsletters, drawing from news sources and SUI activities.
  • Managing media engagement / producing press releases etc. for national, local and specialist media.
  • Building on the segmentation of our audiences and creation of bespoke communications plans for each segment.
  • Promotion of SUI activities and profile through a variety of channels.
  • Promoting initiatives geared towards the entrepreneurial and investment community.
  • Actively engage with the annual scaleup survey and help to increase scaleup business participation.

Content Creation

  • Oversee blog posts production and direction for ScaleUp Institute website and other external sources.
  • Developing fresh content for publication by working with ScaleUp Institute researchers and research partners.
  • Working with published and new research content to create materials for dissemination (e.g. stakeholder briefings)
  • Distilling case study research into summaries; insights; infographics; etc., for publication, using the detailed analysis conducted by our researchers to create the published copy. 
  • Fully contributing to the writing and development of the Annual Review and other ScaleUp Institute publications. Highlight publications and works by our partners and others in the ecosystem through social media or other appropriate channels. 
  • Supporting the publishing process where necessary by working with designers and printers to ensure content is appropriate and accurate.

Web management

  • Oversee social media engagement, utilising newly created content and listening to and engaging with the agenda (via retweets, media scans, etc.)
  • Working to keep the website up to date. 

Key Requirements

  • Professional experience with 5+ Years’ experience in related roles
  • Excellent communication and copywriting skills and a communications specialist. 
  • Experience in corporate and public communications, digital marketing and project management
  • Media engagement 
  • Experience of working in a research and policy organisation, trade association, membership organisation or start-up would be desirable
  • Experience of working within the business or finance industry is a plus. 
  • Detail oriented and quality obsessed
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and presentation skills
  • Outstanding organisational and planning abilities; project management 
  • Excellent command of English
  • Computer literacy including MS Office suite and Google Docs/Drive functionality

The ScaleUp Institute is seeking a programme manager to join our growing team, working across the team to oversee and manage our complete range of new and on-going projects.

Main function of job 

  • Managing projects to ensure timely delivery of the programme of work and also managing reporting on the project 
  • Supporting contractual and budgetary processes including liaising as necessary with lawyers and external project partners / commissioning entities 
  • Supporting development of annual survey and annual review and coordinating activities of the parties involved in the programme
  • Monitoring the progress of SUI programmes and projects and improving efficiency
  • Preparing reports and updating the senior leadership team and other stakeholders about project delivery
  • Confirming successful delivery at the project’s completion
  • Supporting the SUI overall work programme

Education and Experience

Qualifications/education required:

  • Degree educated. 
  • Computer literacy, in particular Microsoft Suite along with Google Workspace functionality.
  • Demonstrable experience of a similar role.

Experience, knowledge and skills required

  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • The ability to command respect and to create a sense of community amongst the members of the project teams.
  • Excellent knowledge of techniques for planning, monitoring and controlling projects and programmes.

Main function of job 

  • Assisting in the research and analysis of a range of sensitive data and information from Partners and others in the business ecosystem to support the ScaleUp Institute’s programme of work. 
  • Working with the Research team to interpret and analyse a range of statistical information, including numbers of scaleups and pipeline of scaling businesses, through detailed processes and procedures.
  • Contributing to research and local area assessments/ monitoring. This will include assisting the evaluation of ScaleUp programmes and initiatives to turn into effective case studies. 
  • Assisting with case study assessments. 
  • Supporting the agreed research agenda within the Scaleup themes of leadership, talent and skills, access to markets, finance and infrastructure. 
  • Supporting the annual scaleup survey and review process of which the research work will play a key role.
  • Supporting the SUI overall work programme

Education and Experience

  • A good honours degree (or predicted), with a quantitative component. 
  • Computer literacy, in particular experience in Microsoft Excel, or similar, along with Word Processing software.
  • Demonstrable experience of data analysis.

Experience, knowledge and skills required

  • Knowledge, understanding and interest in business growth and public policy.
  • Curiosity and willingness to learn new software or programming languages. 
  • Highly numerate, with a good grasp of statistical reasoning.
  • Experience with data analytical/statistical software packages (Stata, R, Python, SPSS or equivalent) is beneficial. 
  • Strong attention to detail.

This private sector, not-for-profit institution is focused on collaborating across the public and private sectors with Government, policy makers, corporate partners and educational establishments to make a real and identifiable impact in developing the UK in its capabilities to scale a business helping our UK high growth businesses to grow further and ‘scale up’.

Scaleups are highly innovative and international, they are found in every sector and region of the UK and contribute significantly to the UK economy representing around 50% of all SME turnover.

  • Leading the ScaleUp Institute’s research and analytical agenda across a range of sensitive data and information from partners and others in the business ecosystem to support the ScaleUp Institute’s programme of work.
  • Developing unique and distinctive Thought Leadership reports, blogs, vlogs and papers aligned to the Scaleup themes of leadership, talent and skills, access to markets, finance and infrastructure.
  • Developing detailed bespoke insights and evidence for policy makers and partners as they evolve scaleup solutions.
  • Monitoring scaleup activity to provide market information and insight.
  • Assessing, interpreting and analysing a range of statistical information, including numbers of scaleups and pipeline of scaling businesses, through detailed processes and procedures.
  • Developing the Annual ScaleUp Survey and Review.

Education and Experience

  • Degree in economics, geography, business or related discipline and relevant Postgraduate degree (or significant business experience).
  • Proven track record in leading significant research and thought leadership projects in the UK and/or internationally.
  • Recognised and proven track record in contributing to published research and analysis.

Experience, knowledge and skills required

  • At least 5 years experience in research and analysis of business
  • Specific knowledge, understanding and interest in business growth, the scaleup ecosystem, international policy, entrepreneurialism, entrepreneurial finance. Cross-sector interest is beneficial.
  • Highly numerate with excellent skills in data analytics
  • Excellent knowledge of a variety of survey, statistical and data analytical software packages: such as SQL, Python / R, Tableau, Stata or SPSS
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, including technical writing skills
  • Experience in translating research findings into practical recommendations
  • Experience of working with senior stakeholders from public and private sector and academia
