Describing itself as “a distributed, global company,” Index Ventures is an international venture capital firm with dual headquarters in San Francisco and London. It invests in technology-enabled businesses, with a focus on sectors including e-commerce, fintech, mobility, gaming, infrastructure and AI, and security.
Between January 2017 to June 2024, the firm supported 55 UK companies in 82 funding rounds, of which 27 were follow-on rounds. Almost seven in ten (69%) companies were at their growth stage at the time of the fundraising.
Index has supported scaleups such as classified ad platform Adzuna, online flower seller Bloom & Wild, regtech ComplyAdvantage, children’ s computer kit company Kano and apprenticeship tracking service Multiverse.
In 2024, Index Ventures announced $2.3 billion in new funds to support startups from seed to IPO. This brings their total capital raised to $15 billion since their founding, highlighting their extensive influence in the global venture capital space. The new funds are split into $800 million for early-stage ventures and $1.5 billion for growth-stage companies. Index Ventures has backed over 108 unicorns (startups valued at over $1 billion), with 57 of them going public. Some of the high-profile companies in their portfolio include Revolut, DeepL, and Wiz
The firm’s 2024 focus includes sectors such as AI, fintech, and healthcare, as they see these areas driving the next generation of innovation and entrepreneurship globally. Index Ventures has established a presence in 24 of the world’s top 30 tech ecosystems, enabling them to work closely with founders across geographies
The firm argues that “what used to be venture capital’s primary product – capital – is no longer its main selling point. The next generation of entrepreneurs is looking for expertise and personal relationships with their investors, where we become partners, advisors, mentors and coaches.”
The firm also produces Index Resources, comprising guides, podcasts, plans and playbooks for companies seeking to expand into the US and Europe, as well as a guide to stock options for rewarding talent.
