Kickstart is the flagship initiative of Grand Scale, a UK-based education technology company that supports the commercial growth of innovation-driven businesses. Recently endorsed by the ScaleUp Institute, it equips high-potential spinouts, scaling ventures, and scaleups with the commercial, sales, and investment capabilities needed to achieve sustainable growth and expand into new markets.
Launched in 2020, Kickstart builds on over four decades of collective experience in supporting business growth and applies this practical knowledge to address the specific challenges faced by innovation-led scaling companies. It has supported more than 100 ventures and 260 business leaders to date, with a strong emphasis on engaging regional and underrepresented ecosystems. The programme was co-developed with university spinouts as part of a structured commercialisation pathway, ensuring that its content and methodology align with the needs of research-based and early-stage scaling businesses.
Kickstart provides six months of structured learning, peer collaboration, and one-to-one mentoring designed to help founders commercialise innovation, enter new markets, and secure investment. Each cohort of 20 to 25 ventures takes part in approximately 30 hours of guided activity, including workshops on go-to-market strategy, enterprise sales, and investment readiness. Delivered through Grand Scale’s online learning platform, the programme combines live sessions, on-demand resources, and practical toolkits that enable participants to apply learning directly within their businesses.
Participants gain support to develop clear value propositions, identify customer segments, and build repeatable sales frameworks that convert innovation into revenue. The programme’s focus on market entry and sales execution has supported companies to expand internationally, with many achieving traction in Europe, North America, and Asia. Evaluation data indicates that 62% of ventures have entered new global markets, 79% have launched new products or services, and 93% have developed active sales pipelines within a year of completing the programme. The investment component further strengthens founders’ understanding of fundraising and financial planning, enabling them to communicate business progress and growth potential to funders and partners.
Independent evaluation shows a measurable impact. Within twelve months of completion, 75% of participating ventures reported securing sales contracts worth a combined £7.8 million, while 75% raised £82.4 million in investment and grant funding, two-thirds of which originated outside the South of England. Participant satisfaction has remained consistently high, with a customer satisfaction score of 91% and a Net Promoter Score of 76. On average, the programme delivers a 2.9:1 return on investment based on direct revenue outcomes, alongside significant improvements in marketing strategy capability and lead-generation confidence.
Kickstart is collaborating with regional economic development agencies and innovation networks across the UK. Its flexible, modular structure enables adaptation to different regions and sectors, supporting a broad range of organisations from early-stage spinouts to established scaleups. With new regional partnerships and an active alumni network, Grand Scale Kickstart continues to support the commercialisation and market expansion of innovation-led ventures across the UK.
