Talent and Skills

The UK has a major skills gap that holds back scaleup companies. It is the most significant issue for them. These companies have particular issues recruiting people with technical and business skills, whether taking on young people straight from education or those with more experience. These skills are vital for rapidly scaling businesses to enable them to develop new products and services, navigate new markets and develop their business structures. Given the size of the skills gap, action is required by both business and government.

The purpose of the Talent and Skills Committee is to provide assessment and direction on the key needs and policy issues affecting talent and skills for scaleup businesses. This includes research, analysis and thought leadership as well as reviews of programmes that support scaleup businesses, in order to develop appropriate case studies and learnings. Where relevant, the committee will also undertake specific sector support and analysis.

The committee reviews on an annual basis the existing programmes as identified in the 2014 Scale-Up Report, and assesses new programmes to put forward to the Evidence committee. It reviews talent and skills policies in the UK and internationally.
