UK NATIONS

As we assess the development across UK nations in 2020 we see an overall slow down in scaleup growth in all nations. However, Wales is showing encouraging growth in recent years and in 2021 has scaleup density higher than Scotland.

The overall UK average increased by 0.3 scaleups per 100k population during the 8 year monitoring period between 2013 – 2021. By comparison, the devolved nations – 

  • Northern Ireland: The average of the region showed a slight increase from 31.4 in 2013 to 34.7 in 2021 in scaleup density (up 3.3 scaleups per 100k population). 
  • Scotland: The average of the region showed a slight decrease from 32.8 in 2013 to 32.3 in 2021 in scaleup density (declined 0.5 scaleups per 100k population). 
  • Wales: The average of the region showed a slight increase from 30.0 in 2013 to 33.3 in 2021 in scaleup density (up 3.3 scaleups per 100k population).
