WEST MIDLANDS

Across the West Midlands there are 2,050 scaleups with key clusters in Wholesale & Retail, Health & Social Work, Admin & Support Services and Manufacturing. There are 1,010 businesses in the scaling pipeline growing between 15-19.99%.

There are 5 localities and 30 Local authorities within the West Midlands region. 7 local authorities in the region (Birmingham; Coventry; Dudley; Sandwell; Solihull; Walsall; Wolverhampton) have combined to form the West Midlands Combined Authority. Over the eight year trend since monitoring began we see on a regional level:

  • The average of the region has decreased from 43.2 in 2013 to 34.4 in 2021 in scaleup density. By comparison the national average increased by only 0.3 scaleups per 100k population during this time period.

More locally we observe:

  • Worcestershire is the only locality that has been tracking above the UK average since 2016. However it is showing signs of slowdown in the most recent year, and has fallen below the national average in 2021.
  • Black Country continues to struggle as the area with the lowest density of scaleups amongst all localities in the region.
