Across the South West there are 2,690 scaleups with key clusters in Accommodation/Food, Health/Social Work, Wholesale/Retail, Admin & Support Services, Professional, Scientific & Tech. There are 1,345 businesses in the scaling pipeline growing between 15-19.99%.

As we assess the development across 2020 in local scaleup dynamics we see an overall slow down in scaleup growth in many localities and continuing regional disparities.

There are 5 LEPs within the South West and over the seven year trend since monitoring began we see on a regional level:

The average of the region increased at a good pace from 39.1 in 2013 to 45.9 in 2020 in scaleup density (up 6.8 scaleups per 100k population). By comparison the national average increased by 8.5 scaleups per 100k population during this time period.

More locally we observe:

West of England is the only LEP tracking above national average in 2020.
Swindon and Wiltshire’s scaleup density showed the biggest variation – it peaked in 2017 with 52.3 scaleups per 100k population and dropped to 40.6 in 2020 – ranking as the LEP with lowest density in the region.
Cornwall and Isles of Scilly showed a similar trend to Swindon and Wiltshire in scaleup density over the 7 year period – reaching 55.8 scaleups per 100k population in 2016 and dropping to 43.4 in 2020

Scaleups are seeking locally focused scaleup support with connectivity to national and international programmes and stakeholders as they grow.
