UK NATIONS

As we assess the development across UK nations in 2020 we see an overall slow down in scaleup growth in all nations and continuing regional disparities.

The overall UK average increased by 8.5 scaleups per 100k population during the 7 year monitoring period between 2013 – 2020. By comparison, the devolved nations –

  • Northern Ireland: The average of the region showed a slight increase from 31.4 in 2013 to 46.4 in 2020 in scaleup density (up 15 scaleups per 100k population).
  • Scotland: The average of the region showed a slight increase from 32.8 in 2013 to 42.2 in 2020 in scaleup density (up 9.4 scaleups per 100k population).
  • Wales: The average of the region showed a slight increase from 30.0 in 2013 to 37.9 in 2020 in scaleup density (up 7.9 scaleups per 100k population).

Scaleups are seeking locally focused scaleup support with connectivity to national and international programmes and stakeholders as they grow.

In the following pages we look deeper into Northern Ireland and Scotland highlighting the local dynamics and strategies that have been developed alongside the scaleup support that is available and what impact has been delivered for local scaling businesses.

Further insights on each devolved nation can be found in the Annex and a range of public and private scaleup programmes operating in each Devolved Nation can be found below: Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
